The Motorist Easter 2022 Car Meet

The Motorist

The Motorist at Sherburn in Elmet is the kind of place that petrolheads dream about. Tucked away close to Sherburn Aero Club, The Motorist is built to celebrate cars of all ages. They have a working garage for all your mechanical needs, a sales room stocked with tasty classic motors, a cafe stocked with tasty snacks, and an events calendar busier than your average bus time table. There’s something going on every week and a lot of the events are free to attend. Did I mention that this is the sort of place that petrolheads dream about?

Easter Family Fun Day

Having been gifted with a beautiful bank holiday free to enjoy, I bundled Lucy and my good buddy Ciarán in to the Supercharged adventure-mobile and we trundled off to Sherburn. We were all excited to see what The Motorist’s family fun day had to offer. Ciarán was no doubt thinking about getting his face painted like Spiderman (who cares if he’s 38 years old), and Lucy was probably dreaming about Easter eggs. I, on the other hand, was hoping for a plethora of gorgeous cars to photograph, and I was not disappointed. As we rolled in to the car park we were greeted by a pair of of McLaren P1s and a brand new Ford GT, so not a bad start.

An Embarrassment of Riches

Wandering around the car park presented us with an embarrassment of riches, with exotic metal from every corner of the world on show. The German contingent seemed particularly well represented. The place was awash with Porsches, BMWs, and Audis in all manner of flavours, along with some lovely VWs of various vintages. One particular German machine caught my eye above all the others. It really was a beauty, but more on that shortly.

Keeping Our End Up

Never ones to be beaten by our teutonic friends, we Brits managed to keep our end up too. Scattergunned across the car park was a solid showing of MGBs, Midgets, Morris Minors, Spitfires, Austins, Land Rovers, TVRs, a late 90’s Metro, and an ex-military Green Goddess. The Rover P5 shown below had the smoothest engine I’ve heard in a good long while. The thing was nearly silent on tick-over and barely any louder when shown some welly. The owner admitted that it wasn’t in perfect condition but he enjoys using it almost daily as the luxury family car that it was designed to be. That seems a tremendous idea to me, and I’d have taken the Rover over one of the McLarens every day of the week.

Heading Inside

At The Motorist, the fun doesn’t stop when you step inside. Even as you sit drinking your cuppa you’re surrounded by classics to drool over. The cafe area currently boasts (amongst other things) another MGB, a Midget, and a pair of clean looking Minis next to the vending machine! In the back room is a wonderful old Alvis hidden amongst the T-shirts and branded merchandise. Although the Alvis wasn’t for sale, pretty much everything else was. How awesome would it be to order two cups of tea, two breakfasts, and a MK1 Lotus Cortina!

If you’re reading this in the future (hello), the stock list has probably changed since this was written, but an up to date stock list can be found here on The Motorist’s sales page.

Car of the Day

As with all of the events and shows I go to, I like to pick a ‘Car of the Day’. The COTD is the one I’d most like to own myself. If you’re a regular reader of the blog you’ll no doubt pick up that my tastes aren’t always predictable. In this case I wasn’t interested in the McLaren P1s, the Ford GT, nor any of the other beautiful exotica we’ve seen already. My pick was something much better.

So, here it is…

What a beauty! This 1968 Beetle 1300 really made an impression on me. I absolutely love this car! It’s a stone cold classic, but with just the right amount of customisation and personalisation. In my opinion the modifications really suit the car, and it looks gorgeous in gleaming black and chrome. Those Porsche Fuchs wheels and twin exhaust pipes finish things off perfectly on the exterior.

The interior too is a masterclass in style. The black and chrome theme continues inside, with tasteful red seats being subtly mirrored by the steering wheel centre, red details on the clocks, and even a red USB cable. The whole lot is set off perfectly by the timeless wood-rimmed steering wheel and EMPI gear knob.

Growing up I always yearned for a Beetle, but I never had one. I guess I moved on to other cars, but this Beetle may well have singlehandedly re-ignited my aircooled desires. Huge credit to whoever built this; a well deserved ‘Car of the Day’.

What a day it was too! We all had a great time at the family fun day despite Ciarán’s lack of face paint and Lucy’s inability to find any Easter eggs. The atmosphere at ‘The Motorist’ was great and we were all just pleased to have seen some interesting cars. No doubt with such a busy events calendar, we’ll be back again soon.

So What’s Next?

So what’s next for the Supercharged gang? Well… We’ve got another photoshoot in the editing suite right now. I won’t give the game away entirely, but it’s something very cool, pretty rare, and bright orange. You really won’t want to (or be able to) miss it!

If you’d like to have a photoshoot of your own vehicle, or have the Supercharged team making memories and taking photos at your event, simply get in touch. We’d love to join you.

Bye for now!
